This project emerged from conversations about migration, land, identity, and home. We found ourselves, strangely, with a margin of freedom, able to ask questions that we were previously unable to ask. What is home to the dispossessed? What do we make of the ruins and our longings for them? Can we resist the ideological pull of nostalgia and still find belonging?
"Staring at the Stars, Wishing to be Somewhere Else" is a comprehensive group show featuring six Berlin-based artists. The exhibition pairs sound and video installation with photography, textiles, poetry, and letterpress prints. The artworks on display disrupt monolithic narratives of geography and temporality. Centering an affect of ambivalence, "Staring at the Stars and Wishing to be Somewhere Else" strives to deconstruct inherited myths of home and homeland. What remains is a defiant expression of attachment and memory.
