Come. Sit with us at the table we have set, a table built in collaboration between Barazani and Free Humanitarians.
Our guest is Seán Binder, one of twenty-four who stand accused in what has become one of the largest trials against those who would dare to aid the lost and the drowning on Europe’s shores. Seven years have passed since he was first taken, and now, at last, his trial begins on December 4, 2025, in Lesvos, Greece. If the court finds him guilty, he could be bound away for twenty years.
But he will not come to us with only his own story. He will tell of the rescue work he and others carried out in the waters of the mediterranean sea, which has become one of the deadliest in the world. He will tell of the laws, the politics, the fear that twisted a simple act of saving lives into a crime. He will tell of borders that have grown sharper, deadlier, because compassion itself is being put on trial.
This evening is more than a dinner. It is a reckoning. It is a warning. When the rule of law falters, when human rights are scorned, when mercy is made criminal, we must decide how we will answer.
